Can you imagine in 999 A.D. how many prediction that the world would come to an end there might be? With no T.V. or internet it would be easy to get caught up in the moment by the mystics of the time.
Then there was the dreaded Y2K bug that was to wreak havoc on the worlds computer system and cause an end as the world knew it. In 1999 many people and businesses waited for 2000 with the thought the end of the world might be near.
Today the end of the world predictions has again emerged with gloomier outcomes. People are nervous just as in 999 A.D. and 1999 A.D. due to the continuing headlines predicting wars, famines, and calamities. We must ask ourselves if the events happening today support any of the end of the world predictions.
The Nostradamus prophesies have been very accurate in predicting certain world leaders rising to power and major events occurring. His prophesies were writing some 500 years ago and were accurate in predicting the demise of the World Trade Centers in 2001.
What is predicting for the future? Are the prophesies predicting another 911, asteroid hitting the earth or some other major calamity?
Will December 21, 2012 be the end of the world? One calendar that has been extremely accurate for centuries says it will be. The Mayan calendar has been so precise it predicted the eclipses of Venus moon 6000 years in advance with only one day of error.
But the prophecies in themselves dont matter as much. We need physical proof that things are changing in a way to signal the end of the world may be near.
Today we have that proof if one just stops, looks round, and start putting the pieces of the puzzle together

FOOD CRISIS

Being a born and bred capitalist I am one of the last people to say “The government” must provide. But I truly believe that they have missed a trick with regards to the food crisis gripping the country and stimulating economic growth.
The problem – food is too expensive and it is hurting people at the bottom of the food chain (excuse the pun) and the majority of food producers and agricultural operations are producing near capacity.
The solution – divert all the small business and entrepreneur funding into food producing solutions.
Dry food solutions
The cost of producing dry food product like jelly,soup, maize and bread dough is relatively low. Technology wise you need very little to produce this in reasonable quantity – assuming that profit is not your intention. If you are pushing for profit then product volume is everything. If you are pushing to feed people then these kind of mini factories or operations can be set up in very little time.
Basically all that is needed is some raw materials, small industrial scales and blenders and a bit of guidance in terms of manufacturing food products to relevant safety standards and you’re in business. With a single qualified person and some small cash grants one could be in business in 7 working days.
This isn’t a simplistic way to look at the problem nor is it a simplistic solution without merit. If cash was made available and project managers and equipment were appointed mobile factories could be in place supporting communities very quickly.
The people involved in the project would learn some vital skills including:
- General food safety and manufacturing skills
- Community participation and development of base level business skills
- Packaging technology for the layman
And most importantly they would be able to ease the burden on community members who are going hungry. The grants are there and a number of the government funds are looking for ways in which to spend the money they have in their coffers – here you have the ideal way to coach business skills in a “critical” situation, you’re supporting your communities with a basic food product and you are getting the community involved.
South Africa has a hungry community with a middle economy that is slowing down rapidly. We have a low income earning community that is badly feeling the pinch and we are desperately trying to find ways to boost skills in manufacturing and food technology. We have funds available and a government policy that badly wants to develop grassroots / type operations.
Logic says that for a relatively low investment per township or community, you could be rolling this program out in under a month. The community would benefit and the opportunity to develop entry level entrepreneur and manufacturing skills would benefit the people of South Africa immensely.

BATTLE OF BROOKLYN

Sitting in the state of New York, Long Island - the world's 149th largest island and home to 7.5 million people - is also the scene of the first major battle in the American Revolutionary War which followed the United States' Declaration of Independence. The battle was also the largest battle in the entire conflict and the first that a United States army ever engaged in.In March 1776, George Washington, (who went on to become the first ever president of the United States) moved his troops to Long Island and New York City and set about reinforcing their defences there, anticipating an attack from British troops. Their intelligence had proved accurate; on the 22nd of August 1776, 15,000 British troops began to cross The Narrrows to Brooklyn from Staten Island. Much of the American rebel force were undisciplined, untrained and unaccustomed to following orders from above, giving their British counterparts a considerable advantage. The British managed to manoeuvre their troops through unguarded terrain and then surprise the Americans with unrelentless firing of their musket shot, from column after column until they reached bayonet range, at which point they charged the American lines and engaged them in hand to hand combat. The Americans had little chance under this form of open combat and fell back.The British troops' numerical and tactical superiority served them well; the American rebels were severely outnumbered, yet prepared to die for the cause; and die they did. After losing hundreds of troops in various skirmishes, Washington decided it was time to retreat from Brooklyn while the wind was still blowing in his favour. As the rain lashed down and fog descended over the area, Washington used the weather to conceal his retreat; in complete silence, nine thousand men, complete with their ammunition, artillery, provisions, horses and carriages rowed across the East River. The entire retreat operation took 13 hours, and was completed without the loss of a single man. When the British troops marched up to Brooklyn Heights the following morning expecting to force the rebels into surrender, or slaughter them, they found nothing but a few empty ration packs.On September the 11th, 1776, the British accepted the request of an American delegation to discuss a treaty, but the peace conference failed because the Americans refused to revoke the Declaration of Independence. The British troops then continued to move through Long Island, occupying local homes, farmsteads and even , Hempstead, Hicksville, and various other settlements.British Military historians were later to commend Washington on his retreat; while his original misjudgement had put his army in extreme danger, his strong leadership is credited with saving the majority of his troops, which would have likely been massacred had it not been for Washington's quick thinking.

The long past Egyptian culture is a fascinating one, and you will be hard pressed to find anyone to disagree with you. Ancient Egypt today is situated in Africa, at the northwest area. The Nile River, in most cases just called the 'Nile', passed through the center of the culture. The northern part was known as Lower Egypt, and the southern part as Upper Egypt - a fact which has lead to some misunderstanding among visitors. The Nile is recognized as the longest river in the world, but some researchers find that there is a possibility that the Amazon River situated in South America may be a short distance longer. In fact there are three separate sections, or periods of time that Egyptian past can be divded up into. These are known as the Old Kingdom, the Middle Kingdom, and the Modern Kingdom. Each period has specific facts which are unique to it, and are best learned and studied on their own.The kingdoms of ancient Egypt were under the leadership of the Pharaoh at the time, and in fact the ancient Egyptian people themselves held the strong expectation that somehow their gods were responsible for choosing each Pharaoh, thus the people could rest soundly at night, feeling that all was under control. In fact, the government of ancient Egypt can be described as the first national government in the whole world, and people referred to as viziers, who were officials assigned to the Pharaoh, also helped to rule.The Egyptian culture, like the Sumerian culture, had a language and writing style of their own. A Papyrus leaf was used to make paper - thus defining the source of the idiom, paper!Many people find the ancient cultures, Egyptian significantly, to be profoundly mysterious as a result of the spectacular massive monuments, most notably the Great Pyramid at Giza, very close to Cairo, that are still in view to the present time.

Angels are generally most closely associated with Christianity, despite their origins in much earlier belief systems and cultures. Nevertheless, the angel has been important to the Christian faith since its conception, and there are almost 300 references to angels in the Bible in some 280 different verses, making it very much a feature of the religion. While the exact nature and status of the angel in Christianity is far from settled, it is appreciated as a critical part of the Bible and the Christian faith. Likewise, angels are present in most other religion and play a part in somewhat more diverse faiths and individual beliefs.Angels in The BibleThe concept of guardian angels, or angels sent down from heaven to look over the individual and prevent harm, is one that can be found throughout the Bible, particularly in the Old Testament - “See that you do not look down on one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my father in heaven” (Matthew 18:10). There are no specifics in the Bible about the hierarchy of angels or how they would function at a practical level. Indeed, there is an assumption (but no real definition) that they would act with a particular individual, and would be assigned the ‘mission’ of protecting that person from sin and deviance. Marzano and Marzano (2003) attribute positive teacher-student relationships as “the keystone for all other aspects of classroom management” (p. 7). When positive teacher-student relationships are in place, student achievement increases and there are fewer discipline problems and rule violations in the classroom. Such relationships are characterized by three specific teacher behavior components, which when implemented correctly, result in effective classroom management. These teacher behavior components are: “exhibiting appropriate levels of dominance; exhibiting appropriate levels of cooperation; and being aware of high-needs students”. The first thing teachers must do in a classroom is demonstrate appropriate levels of dominance. Dominance is defined and implemented into the classroom by way of establishing clear expectations for behavior and academics, establishing learning goals, and using assertive behavior towards students. … The second teacher behavior component that establishes positive teacher-student relationships and leads to effective classroom management is exhibiting appropriate levels of cooperation to get the students and teachers working as a team. Providing flexible learning goals, taking personal interest in students, communicating care and support to students, and using positive classroom behaviors are key concepts in facilitating cooperation. … The last component towards effective classroom management is the awareness of high-needs students. This targets all students, such as those with diverse learning styles, culture and language, and special needs. This section is especially helpful to note because of the diversity in classrooms today. Marzano and Marzano outline five categories of high-needs students (passive, aggressive, attention problems, perfectionist, and socially inept) by definition, characteristics, and suggestions of classroom strategies for each type. In conclusion, I would strongly recommend this article for future teachers and all teachers. Effective classroom management is key to creating a classroom environment where students feel valued and can learn to their full potential.”

A poor body image can lead to emotional distress, low self-esteem, dieting, anxiety, depression, and eating disorders.

HURDLES FOR TEEN GIRLS

Researchers say sexual harassment may take the form of unwanted sexual behavior and sexist comments, and repeated sexual harassment can negatively affect girls' selfesteem, achievement, and beliefs about others.
"This study documents the continued pervasiveness of sexism in the lives of adolescent girls," researcher Campbell Leaper, professor of psychology at the University of California Santa Cruz, says in a news release. "When sexual harassment frequently occurs, girls may come to expect demeaning behaviors as normal in heterosexual. And when girls' achievement is discouraged in traditionally male-dominated fields, their potential is limited and society loses potentially talented individuals in important fields such as science and technology."
Sexual Harassment Starts Early
In the study, researchers surveyed 600 girls between the ages of 12 and 18 from California and Georgia. The girls were asked about their views on gender roles and sexism, as well as their personal experiences with sexual harassment. They were also asked about discouraging comments they'd received about their abilities in science, math, computers, and sports.
The results, published in Child Development, showed the vast majority (90%) had experienced sexual harassment at least once. The most commonly reported examples were:
Receiving unwanted romantic attention from a male (67%)
Hearing demeaning gender-related comments (62%)
Being teased about their appearance (58%)
Receiving unwanted physical contact (51%)
Being teased, bullied, or threatened with harm by a male (28%)
At least 52% of the girls also said they had heard at least one discouraging comment about their math, science, and computer abilities related to their sex.
In addition, more than three-fourths of girls (76%) said they had also heard such discouraging comments about their athletic ability.
The source of sexual harassment and sexist comments was most often close male friends and brothers (25%) and other boys (32%), followed by teachers or coaches (23%) and close female friends or sisters (18%) and other girls (22%).

PARENTING CARE

Easy Does It. Adjusting to new schedules, earlier morning alarms, and stricter meal times can be difficult for children. Take it easy and allow your family to adjust slowly by starting two weeks before the fall routine has to be followed. Start with moving bedtimes or wake times ten or 15 minutes at a time and adjusting meal times by 30 minutes or so. A longer—and slower—transition will help everyone involved.
2. Three Things. The demands and expectations put on children, parents, and families today can be overwhelming. Many families spend all their time running from one place to another just to stay caught up with everyone else. Don’t let others decide how your family should spend its time, let your family decide. Have each member of your family write down the three things that are most important to him/her in the fall, then have a family meeting to find a way to make sure each person’s items have a time in the schedule.
3. Everyone Chooses a Responsibility. Once you know what your new schedule will be like, let each member of the family decide what they want to take responsibility for. For example, decide who will make sure people are up on time, who will make the meals, who will drive to specific events, who will clean the kitchen and bathrooms, and who will take out the garbage. You might be surprised by some of your children’s choices, and you just might be amazed at how well they follow through with those choices. When someone chooses to do something on their own, they are much more likely to follow through than if someone else tells them to do it.
4. Plan Time for You. Don’t forget to book yourself some time in that new schedule. You need time for you and your top three priorities just like your children do. Set a good example for your children by showing them a healthy way to take care of yourself.
5. Set Expectations Early. At least one week before school starts, sit down with the family and explain what the new schedule will be like, what activities will be occurring, and what to expect. Knowing what will be going on will make it easier for everyone to stay on track.
6. Review Your Parenting Values. Now is the time to get yourself ready for being the parent you want to be in the fall – review your list of parenting values. If you don’t have a list of values, refer to the Coach-Parenting Certified Parent Program to develop your list. Pick one value to focus on for the month of September and see how many ways you can bring that value into your everyday parenting during the month.
7. Celebrate Summer. Find a way to celebrate, remember, and/or commemorate the summer you just had. Talk about trips you took, your favorite days, or things you want to remember; make scrapbook pages, a poster to hang on the wall, or a family memory book together. Don’t let these last couple weeks of summer slip by unnoticed, use them to round out the summer.
8. Family Time. Family time can be so scarce during the school year: find one last way to spend time together as a family before the fall rush starts. A few examples are sitting in your backyard, having a family game night, going camping, or making dinner together. Be together as a family, talk, share stories, smile, and laugh.
9. Watch the Sunset or Sunrise. Watching the day begin or end can be very grounding – find a quiet spot to watch the sun rise or set with your family. Make an effort to become connected to the earth, the day, and the cycle of life. Take a deep breath and remind yourself that schedules and hectic days aren’t always the most important things in life---find a way to ground yourself now so you won’t be pulled, pushed, and tugged by the less important things when fall hits.
10. Hug Your Children. Let your children know that they are what is important to you. Before
you send them off to school, activities, child care, sports, etc., let them know how much you
love them, how much you enjoy being with them, and how much you enjoy watching them
grow and learn. It’s a bit “sappy,” and many kids will brush it off with a drawn out “Mom” or
“Dad”, but they’ll get the message and remember it.

Children learn best by being given clear, firm and consistent direction from parents who are clear, firm and consistent in their approach. How to Discipline Children by Being Clear: Firstly find and maintain clarity within yourself and then follow through on simple, clear instructions. Clarify for your self what being clear means. It is about being plain, obvious, and understandable in a clear, short sentence that explains exactly what you mean. It isn't about maybe this or maybe that. Often parents have no idea that they chop and change their minds within minutes. To become clear about your own patterns of behavior, observe yourself and ask for your partner's help in this. "We are going to tidy up your toys in five minutes", is clear and direct. Follow this with, "Please help me tidy up your toys now" and it means just that. Be firm with yourself about this. It doesn't mean soon, or later, but now. I have seen parents give out this simple instruction, then become distracted themselves by a television program, conversation or magazine. What their children observe is parents saying one thing and doing another and this gives a much distorted message. Multiplied over many times each day, is it any wonder that children cease to follow simple instructions? How to Discipline Children by Being Firm: Firstly find and maintain firmness for yourself and then follow through with firm clear directions in a firm, clear tone. Clarify for your self what being firm means. To be firm is to be certain, definite, and determined. It is also being loving, kind and calm. It means saying no and meaning no, or saying yes and meaning yes and sticking to it. It's about now being now. How often does your no become perhaps, later, maybe giving in, next time, soon, or alright then? This is a very common fault in how to discipline children and again it leads to numerous mixed messages for children. Resolve within yourself and with your partner's help to ascertain how often you are both easily swayed into changing your decisions. Are you allowing your children to manipulate you? Imagine how simple your life will become when you are clear and firm within yourself. It is every child's right to KNOW they can trust their parent's boundaries. Now follow through on this. Giving the direction in a calm, clear, firm tone of voice helps your children to understand that you mean what you say. Being firm is about being in control of both yourself and the situation. How to Discipline Children by Being Consistent: Firstly find and maintain consistency for yourself and then follow through with a firm, clear, consistent approach. Clarify for yourself what being consistent means. To be consistent is to be reliable, dependable and constant. These words immediately convey comfort don't they? Let's look at the opposite of being consistent. Contradictory, unpredictable, changeable. That's definitely lacking in comfort and safety. So how do you want to be seen by your children? To begin with it can seem quite time consuming to concentrate on clear, firm, consistent guidelines. Be aware that this is very true. It takes concentrated effort and time to change old habits to new ones, but if you maintain consistency, you will be very surprised how quickly new patterns of behavior are formed. Indeed, because his father was in the Royal Army Medical Corps, Tomory was born in Hong Kong and partly brought up in India. He was at school near London, and regular visits to the Tate and British Museum, as well as one to the Alte Pinakothek gallery in Munich while on a skiing trip in 1938, kindled his interest in art history.
The Second World War intervened and Tomory soon joined the Royal Navy, into which he was commissioned and served for five and a half years, part of the time on patrol along the North African coast and also on the Murmansk run. In 1946 he started as an undergraduate at Edinburgh University, and by a close scrutiny of the university regulations managed to make art history his major subject.
Tomory's visit to Munich and his knowledge of Peter Thoene's Penguin Modern German Art were to serve him well on graduation, as they impressed Hans Hess, the formidable curator of York City Art Gallery, where Tomory began as Assistant Curator in January 1950. He was thrown in at the deep end, being given immediate responsibility for organising the exhibition "Masterpieces from Yorkshire Houses", the gallery's contribution to the Festival of Britain in 1951.
On his appointment, Hess told Tomory that he did not expect him to stay more than two years; at the same time he made sure that Tomory had a thorough grounding in all aspects of museum management, and as a result he was appointed to a more senior post at Leicester Art Gallery at the end of 1951. Hess knew the leading figures in the worlds of contemporary art and of art history, many of whom came to York, and this laid the foundation of the wide range of contacts which Tomory built up. In the middle of 1954 he moved on to the Arts Council in London, working on touring exhibitions, and in 1956 he took up the post of director of Auckland City Art Gallery.
Tomory was at the Auckland Gallery until 1964. During that time he built up the gallery's collection, making major acquisitions of modernist works as well as New Zealand art, and turning the gallery into a greatly respected institution. He was in particular the champion of the New Zealand artist Colin McCahon, who was for a time on his staff.
At the same time he realised that many European works of art whose significance had not been recognised had been taken to New Zealand. In a remarkable coup, he acquired for Auckland a cache of 37 drawings by Henry Fuseli from a family in Dunedin; he published these in his study of the artist, The Life and Art of Henry Fuseli, which Thames & Hudson published in 1972. After leaving the Auckland Gallery, Tomory moved into teaching, first in Auckland and then as associate professor at Columbia University in New York. His final job in galleries was as senior curator of baroque art at the Ringling Museum in Sarasota, Florida, and his catalogue of their Italian paintings before 1800 was published in 1976.
In 1972 Tomory returned to Oceania as Professor of the History of Art at La Trobe University, Melbourne. His 15 years' tenure of the post was immensely fruitful, and he served the wider cause of his subject as a fellow of the Australian Academy of Humanities from 1974 and a member of its council from 1984 until 1986, as an adviser to the National Gallery of Victoria, and one of the founders of the Art Association of Australia.
It was, however, as a teacher that Tomory left his most enduring legacy. His museum background made him realise the importance for the young not only to see slides of objects but to handle them, and with the help of the London dealer Christopher Mendez, he built up an impressive collection of prints, principally of baroque interest, to aid his teaching. He was not only a dedicated teacher but also a great encourager, and his pupils include many in universities and museums, such as David Marshall at Melbourne University or Mark McDonald in the British Museum. Tomory was very hospitable, but not everyone found him an easy colleague.
After 38 years abroad and three marriages, Tomory returned on his own to Britain in the early 1990s in order to be nearer his two sons. He settled in a flat in the middle of Wareham in Dorset, within walking distance of a railway station and the train to London. He continued to develop his interests and to contribute to a range of periodicals; one of his last articles, in the Journal for British Art, was on a 19th-century British picture which he had not forgotten from his time in York, and he contributed a number of articles to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (in which, incidentally, his old mentor, Hans Hess, inexplicably failed to find a place).
One of the last holidays he took was a coach tour of Scotland, where he had spent so little time. He suffered from osteoporosis, and although he had a number of visitors he led a solitary life. He kept up his contacts, and was very pleased when in 2004 Auckland Art Gallery acquired 124 of the prints which he had bought to aid his teaching. In his final couple of years he was, however, unable to live on his own.

The police have taken Dr Rajesh Talwar, who is accused of killing his 14-year-old daughter Aarushi and domestic help Hemraj, to Haridwar.The police is hoping to get the weapon with which the murders were committed in Haridwar, where the last rites of Aarushi were conducted.The police had earlier questioned the priest, who had performed Aarushi's cremation ceremony, but even that didn't throw up anything substantial.Earlier on Friday, Noida Court denied bail to Dr Talwar and sent him to judicial custody.Dr Talwar had sought bail while the police sought court's permission to put him through narco analysis and brain mapping tests. The Uttar Pradesh Police told the court that they could not find the weapon.The police investigations have revealed little so far. The police claim that Dr Talwar has confessed to both the murders of his 14 year old daughter and of Hemraj and that he promised to reveal the location of the murder weapon.But the contradiction is that Dr Talwar clearly told the court that he had not made any confession to the police.Police now say that Dr Rajesh Talwar called and informed them about the domestic help Hemraj's body lying on the terrace while he was on his way to Hardwar for Aarushi's last rites.But again there are contradictions. Retired policeman KK Gautam was the one who spotted bloodstains near the terrace door and called the police. That's when the police discovered the body. So the question remains as to who really informed the police. Did a relative call up Dr Talwar to inform him that Hemraj's body was found, who in turn then informed the police or did Dr Talwar call up the police much before Hemraj's body was discovered to let them know that the domestic help's body was on the terrace.

The death of a married woman is caused by any burns or bodily injury or occurs otherwise than under normal circumstances. The death should have occured within seven years of her marriage. It is shown that soon after her death she was subjected to cruelty or harassment by her husband or by his relatives of her husband for, or in connection with any demand for dowry, such death shall be called "dowry death" and such husband or relative shall be deemed to have caused her death. whoever commits dowry death shall be punished with imprisonment fro a term which shall not be less than seven years but which may extend to imprisonment for life.

From February 10 through April 30, 2008, the Pennies for Penguins Community Coin Drive, a partnership between the zoo and Coinstar, Inc., invites penguin fans around Puget Sound to turn their coins into cash, to help the zoo raise the final $1 million it needs to give the new Humboldt penguin exhibit an extreme makeover. The current structure was built 60 years ago for seals and sea lions. The zoo expects to begin construction on the new exhibit in June 2008 and open it the following summer, 2009.
In keeping with the zoo’s numerous awards for naturalistic exhibitry, the new, 17,000-square-foot exhibit will be a “signature experience” for the marine-savvy Pacific Northwest. It is being designed to be environmentally friendly for penguins and for people, with an innovative filtration system to recycle virtually all of the water. Shoreline cliffs, crashing waves, rocky tide pools, and nesting burrows will cater to the birds’ natural coastal behavior and highly social demeanor. PENALTY FOR DEMANDING DOWRY

If any person demands, direclty or indirectly, from teh parents or other relatives aor guardian of a bride or bridegroom, as the case maybe, any dowry, he shall be punishable with imprisonment for or term which shall not be less than six months, but which may extend to two years and with fine which may extend to ten thousand rupees.
The object of Section 4 is to discourage the practice of dowry system. Section 3 imposes punishment and penalty for giving or taking any property orvaluable security as dowry. There the offence is completed when the dowry is given or agreed to be given. when a party to the marriage or any one in connection with that marriage at or before or after the marriage makes a 'demand' directly or indirectly, for any property or valuable security as consideration for a marriage between the parties thereto, it becomes an affence.
The wrong-doer underthis section shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term which shall not be less than six months, but which m;ay extend to two years and with fine which may extend to ten thousand rupees. If the Court is satisfied with adequate and special reasons, ti mayimpose a sentence of imprisonment for a term of less than six m;onths, recording the reasons in its judgement.
A mere demand itself constitutes an offence under section4. The petitioner neeed not show evidence that the accused had demanded dowry, and to bring dowry the accused maltreated,beat, and cruelly behaved to extort more and more money or articles or property from the pettioner. If the accused did all these activities, he is liable to be punished under 489-A of the Indian Penal Code,1860, beside he is liable under section 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961. Therefore, generally, when a woman files a complaint for demanding dowry against her husband and her in-laws, she has to refer both these sections at a time, if she was maltreated, cruelty tortured, etc, by; her husbadn or by her in-laws for dowry.

Hindu marriage is a sacred marriage. Father gives the bride to the bridegroom as a gift, called "Kanyadanam". This has been continuing from the last several centuries to uptonow. In the initial stages, besides Kanyadanam, parents of bride were to give certain gifts, viz jewelllery, money, house, land, etc to the bridegroom, which was called "Varadakshina". Howeverm in the initial stage there was no compulsion to give varadakshina. It was given ;out of love and affection and with a view to afford the financial protection to the woman. When once such amount or kind was given to the woman, it was called "Stridhana." No husband or his relatives dared to touch that property. This system was arranged to give financial protection to women in hard days and uin unforeseen events in those days, as in Hindu Dharma Sastras there was no share to women ibn the properties. However, this system had lost its original them, and was evaluataed into a compulsory and formulated as an evil suctom in Hindu community.

It was the worst natural calamity that independent India has every seen with un;fathomable human misery and destruction all around as one of the most progressive state of India, Gujartat was hit by a massive earthquake on Inaid's Republic Day this year. Part of Ahemedabad and most of the towns and villages in Kutuch District were razed to the ground. Highrise buildings collapsed like qa pack of cards trapping hundreds upon thousands of people, with a few lucky ones scrambling to safety and a few rescued by civilians, defence services personnel and relief personnel from foreign countries. The number of dead is said to be more than 35,000 but one would never know the exact number as few can estimate as to how many lay dead under the collapsed concrete structures. At least one Indian leader, Mr George Fernandes made a guess that the dead could be in the range of 100,000 and nobody has challenged him, for everybody knew thata not all the bodies could be recovered. And the number of the injured must be running into lakhs.
The entire country, nay, the entire world, rose like one man to extend a helping hand to all those aggected by the gruesome tragedy. Relief suplies came by road, by rail and by air from all over the world. Medical teams and specialists pitched their tents at the aggeacted cities, towns and villages. The Prime Minister, Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the Home Minister, Mr L.k.Advani, the Defence Minister, Mr.George Fernandes, were among those who reshed to scene of devastation and expressed their solidarity with those affected. Thousands of operations were conducted in the makeshift, open air hospitals. Numberless were those who became orthopedically handicapped. Many states were quick to send their own medical teams. Ham radio services came handy when the regular communications went haywire. Despoite help from all quarters, there was chaos and it was bound to be, for India has not seen the like of it and was least prepared for a disaster of such devilish proporations. People complained of lack of coordination and lamented that even such basic items like drinking water, clothing and blankets were no;t available.

Instruments called seismographs placed in different parts of the world, record vibrations every day, for the earth's crust is never still. A seismograph is a delicately hung weight, which remains still when an earthquake shakes the surrounding parts of the instrument. In other words, this weight, which hangs down from a fixed post, doesnt move during an earthquake. But the post holding it moves, and attached to the post, underneath the weight,is a chart. As the chart moves, a record is made on it by the weight. Record sheets indicate the time the wave arrivces, the force of the motion, and even indicate the direction from which the wave comes. This instrument cannot avoid the quake but only measure it. Kiwi-The Emblem Bird of Newzealand is a strange and unique bird. The use of its name by New Zealand's fighting fources and sports teams has made it famous all over the world. Kiwi is different from; other birds because of the placing of nostrils at the top its long bill, i;ts wings in its early stage of development, the absence of a tail and its relatively large egg.
During daytime the Kiwi sleeps in hollow logs or under banks in the damp, semitropical forest; at night it goes out in search of worms, insects and berries and feeds on them. The Kiwi has brownish feathers and is about the size of a chicken. It has a humped back, stout legs. It makes little whimpering and mewing sounds like a kitten. A swift sprinter (running at ful speed) with a good sense of smell and acute hearing the Kiwi cannot fly. It has poor eyesight. The female Kiwi has a happy domestic life. The male bird builds the nest and incubates, sitting for two and a half months on the one or more eggs. On completion of the incubation period (period of hacting) he eats the shell!
In olden days the Kiwi feathers were used by the Maoris (earliesst inhabitants of NewZealand) for the adorment of their dress which were worn only by chiefs.

In 1577 tghe Sikh Guru Ram Das (1534-1581) obtained a grant of the site, togethr with 500 bighas of land, from Emperor Akbar, on payment of Rs 700 to the Zamindars of Tung, qho owned the land. Here the Sikh Guru had a tank dug at the new site and Ram Das moved from Goindwal to the vicinity of th;e tank and started building a town around it. This town, which was destined to become the religious capital of the Sikhs (Amritsar) came to be known after him as Guru Ka Chak, Dhak Ram Das or Ram Das Pura.

The Sikh Guru Arjun (1563-1606) invited the Muslim divine, Mian Mir of Lahore to lay the foundation stone of the Hari Mandir, the temple of God. Guru Arjun asked all Sikhs to donatae a tenth of their income (dasvandh) in the name of the Guru for building the temple. After the temple was completed and the tank filled with water, the town was given the name Amritsar. The temple was destroyed by the Afghans more than once, and was finally built in its present from in marble and gold by Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

Magnetic Resonance Imageing or MRI is a technique based on nuclear magnetic resonance, and involves measuring the distribution of water in the body by detecting its hydrogen field absorb radiowaves of a particular frequency called the resonant frequency (other atoms do this as well, but are distinguished by having different resonant frequencies). When the radio frequency waves are switched off, the hydrogen atoms re-emit the energy they have absorbed, and these are detected and fed into a computer. The repatriated jockeys, most of whom are from punjab province, are provided compensation for rehabilitation under the Child Formerly Involved in Camel Racing, a project of the CPWB. Of the 79 claims referred to the board, 73 have been approved. Six cases were rejected because the jckeys failed be produce evidence that they had been involved in camel racing either through a passport, visa documents or ticket.

The decree of the Divorce allows each of the parties to have a fresh marriage with other persons, as they like . FEMALE KILLING IN FOETUS ACCORDING TO LAW

In 1779 istself, the then Governor-General prohibited the killing of the child in foetus, and declared that it was on offence punishable. The First Law Commision recommended toincorporate the provision preventing the ternimation of pregnancy (abortion), killing of children in foetus, etc. As per its recommendations separate Sections from 312 to 318 under a separate heading " Of causing of Miscarriage, of injuries to Unborn Children, of the Exposure of Infants, and of the Concealment of Births" was incorporated in the Indian Penal Code, 1860 (act no.45 of 1860). Tjese provision were not sufficient to prevent the wickdness act of cruelty against the women and unborn children.
In 1994, the Indian Government banned "Amniocentesis" for any purposes, except with the permission of a separate Medical Board on special health grounds, If any diagnosist or doctor conducts amniocentsis, he and the patients are liable to be punished.

Try to explain your stand to others when youthink that some individuals or persons are criticizing you, spread false rumors about you, make fun of you and degrade you in front of others by exercising control on your reactions. Neglect the comments in a dignified manner. Do not react quickly when somebody cheats youor takes away you r chance cunningly, you are betrayed by someone you trust. Understand and handle the situation. Learn the lesson and try to be more cautions and wiser than before.
To minimize you anger start counting 1to 20 by which the adrenaline level comes down and you cn prevent the expression of anger or take the deep breath or have a cupof water.
keep yourself busy in some other activity which you like.
Be relaxed and have activities which help you to relax which avoid tension, distress.

Today the word 'killing' has become tongue twister for even a small child. As some channesl are showing images that are absolutely unnecessary.One cannot appreciate the sadistic limits channels cross when they try to show horrible scenes that are revolting to the core. Quite a shocking incident happened sometime in 2001 when a devotee was killed by another in the nearby temple tank in a southern city. It was announced by the chsnnel early next day that the viewers can see an excluvise programme on howa killing took place in the temple tank. And in the evening emrged on the screen a unusal scene of how a person waws bludgeoning uanother every time thea victim's head rose in the water while swimming in the temple tank. The killing took place in the presence of spectators all around the temple tank including the police did act till the killing process was over when a few autorickshaw drivers caught hold of the killer. criticising the particular channel for glorifying the incident .What king of edu;cation or entertainment do such images convey to the viewers. Is killing a 'tamasha' to be watched by thousand of people? What do the media get out of such sensational stories?
With different channels fighting for survival, it is natural that each will look for something that makes it move ahead of the rest. But this competitiveness should not deviate from the principal motives of education and entertainment.

The Media in the competative world brought lot of revolutions since several years ago. As well it tends to misguide too. No body would dispute the glorification of sex, violence and death would not promote positive valuse in viewers. One must realise that most of the viewers, whatever be their age, want the TV in their drawing room to give them a healthy and refreshing break from the boredom of a day. The viewers could be housewives, school children or youngsters in a college or university, employees in the government or private sector or entrepreneurs. Everyone looks for some relaxation or some unwinding as he or she watches a serial, a movie or the regular news or discussion. Living already under stress, none would relish any programme on the small screen that adds to the tension. There is already a plenty ful of worries and anxities and one should hope TV will not add yet another dose of stress in one's life.

MISSILE TEST-FIRED

Agni missile the 800km range was been successfully test-fired from a mobile launcher at Chandipur-on-sea, Orissa on january,9, 2003 by India and plans to undertake more tests soon before its induction in a newlyraised missile group drawn from the Army. Test-fires with one-tonne payload its mosts likely warhead, the solid propellant missile, fills the gap between shorter reange, Prithvi missile and the 2,500-km range Agni II. It will be cheaper than Agni II and better than Prithvi, since it can be fired from a grater distance and with a heavier payload.
The Agni variant tested on january 9, 2003 can be placed at a much grater distance from the border and thus, has much more survival capacity during hostilities. It also has a solid fuepropellant system, which means is can be launched much faster than a liquid-fuel propellent variant. Defence scientists are now gearing up to test the long-range Agni II.

Incidentally, as part of the electoral reforms, the Union Government announced on October 21,2003 asteep hike in election expenditure. As per the Union Cabinet decision, the ceiling on election eaxpenditure for the Lok sabha is Rs25lakhs against the present Rs 15lakhs per constituencies, the limit is RS 10 lakhs per constituency with adjustments in the case of smaller stastes.The new ceiling would be app;icable to the coming Assembly election. For Madhya pradesh, Rajasthanand,Chattisgarh, the ceiling will be Rs 10lakhs per constituency. In the case of Delhi,it is Rs 9lakhs (limit so far was Rs 5lakhs) and for Mizoram to Rs5lakhs (limit so far was Rs 3lakhs). The last revision of the expenditure ceiling was in 1997 and the Election Commission at uts meeting in July, 2003 suggested that the limit be raised since the value of the rupee had declined considerably and the price index had gone up.

With all these reforms, it remains to be seen how successful willb e our system to weed out the corrupt elements and bring in those who will idenfity themsleves with the best for the country. We can't bring paradise on earth at a single stroke, but one thing is certain that vigilance pay. And this is what the Election Commission and the apex court of the country have done they have put the fear of God in every candidate.

Land Grabbing (sudden snatch) means every activity of grabbing of any land (whether belonging to the Government, a local authority, a religion or charitable institutiion or endowment, including a wakf, or anyother private person like an evacuee or a military personnel any other private individual. ) by a person or group of persons, without any lawful entitlement and with a view to illegally taking possession of such lands, or lease and llicences agreements or any other illegal agreement ,tenancies in respect of such land , to construct unauthorised structure for sale or hire or give such lands to any person on rental ,lease and licence basis fro constructionand use for occupation .these lands are termed as "to grab land". and shall be struedor interpret accordingly.And are liable to be punished under the A,P Land Grabbing (Prohibition) Act, 1982.
Land Grabbing to be unlawful Section 3 of the A.P Land Garbbing(prohibition) Act, 1982 says that land grabbing in any from is hereby declared unlawful; and any activity connected with or arising out of landgrabbing shall be an offence punishable under his Act.
Punishment Section 4 of this Act im poses punishment. Whoever contravenes the provisions of Section 4, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which shall not less than six months but which may extend to five years, and with fine which may extend to five thousand rupees.Section 5 also imposes penalty for other offences in connection with land grabbing.

Radium is one of the few elements that constantly emit invisible radiation. Such elements are call radioactive elements and the radiations they may emit arecalled "radioactive rays". there are three types of radioactive rays alpha, beta and gamma. Radium, due to the emission of the radioactive rays, disintegrates and finally gets converted into lead. Half of this radioactrive elements gets converted into lead in 1622 years. This is called the "half life" of the radioactiv element. In the next 1622 years, half of the remaining substance decays into lead . This process continues indefinitely. The radioactive rays are so powerful that they can pass threough differnent kinds of substances including the human body. These rays are very useful in the treatment of cancer.
The credit of the discovery of radium goes to married couple, Pierre Curie and Madam Curie. The story of its discovery is very interesting.
In 1896 Henry Becqueral discovered the phenomenon of radioactivity. ;He found that the uranium emits a kind of invisible radiation which are even more powerful than X-rays. Pierre Curies Madam Curie, in 1898, also found that thorium also emits similar radiation. They also thought that pitchblende,(mineral composed largely of uranium oxide, yielding radium) which is the ore of uranium, must contain some other radioactive substance too. They started refining pitchblende in order to obtain the new radioactive element. Finally, they succeeded in extracting 100 milligrams ;of radium from several tons of pitcheblende. They found that this new element was much more powerful than uranium. Pure radium is white, in colour. It is quite heavy and thousands of times costlier than gold. Radioactive rays are very harmful to the body. If handled carelessly its radioactive rays can wound the body.
